First you must be able to meet these objectives before working out the details:
* you must have a group of people that will use your product (whether known or predicted)
* there has to be a detailed business plan (money is #1 priority)
* there must be an incentive or reason to use your product over others, or at least use it in tandem with existing products (google, yahoo)
* it must be a recognizable or buildable brand if you want to hit it big and be more than a 1 man show
Do you think you have what it takes? Want to work along side someone who can answer most of the questions above, but can't code C very good? Or are you just wandering what everybody else is thinking and thought it'd be cool to ponder a new search engine but don't really want to do the work involved? Do you play well on a team, or do you slow down and try to see who can work the least? Unless you came here to make a new search engine, your wasting your time. If you don't play well on a team, if you can't answer the questions above, and if you are just a "thinker" and not a "doer", your wasting your time. Go get a job and just let Google/Yahoo do the work.
Best of luck! |

Well, thank you for the (unnecessary) lecture. So, no-one should be interested in finding out how things work for ourselves, putting our ideas into practice for our own benefit? And how do you know that even if you follow your advice that it will be successful anyway? A business plan is just a plan, not a sure-fire recipe for success. You can have the greatest business plan ever and still fail.
Most of us, I would guess, are just driven to improve the things around us or do something from a new and hopefully better angle. We don't really need this vacuous nonsense masquarading as sagacity, thanks.

The question also raises stickyicky, is you the right man for the job?
Do you know enough about search technology, and the market to answer the questions thoroughly?
A business plan written by someone that has little knowledge about what he writs about, can fast end up as a one of the famous communists five year plans.
I believe it is two main problems to start a new search engine. One has to writ the software and one have to get financing for enough servers to run it on. It is hard to get financing before one has anything to show. Sow one will have to begin at the software.
Most technology heavy companies have been started by technologists. They has the ideas, they can easy make the first demo then self, then recruit the core team from their social circle.
Then when one has something to sell one need to get econometrics to found, run and manage the company.

You can have the best of business plans, be a great teamplayer, etc etc and get absolutely nowhere if you haven't got the patience and perseverence it takes to actually show the guts it takes to invest plenty time for little or no reward in the interim, trying to develop a product from its initial conception.
All great products had their humble beginnings, but their founders persevered and adapted it on a continual basis to get it where it became huge.
By your tone of voice, you seem to be one that is impatient and expects instant gratification out of an idea, failing which you will just drop the concept before having even tried, and move along to the next idea to drop.
On the other hand, it seems that the folks here who are actually trying, giving up their spare time to try learn something new, will continue on for years to come until one day they hit on an original idea that will take off.
The difference is that by the time you hit an idea, you will have had no experience with it, and zero platform to build on, whereas the folks here will only require minor adaptations to their existing product.
Kudos to the folks here who are actually making an attempt! _________________ <b><a href='http://www.webwobot.com' target='_blank'>WebWobot Search Engine</a></b><br><a href='http://www.massdebation.com' target='_blank'>MassDebation.com ~ No Ordinary Debate!</a> |
